Taking care of your And Our Label dress
And Our dresses are beautiful, they have movement, fluidity, and are light and airy. But as most garments, prone to getting dirty whether it be because of human error or outside forces. At the studio, we use incredibly beautiful but also delicate soft polyester organza fabric to create the dresses of your sweet dreams.
But life happens and we want to be able to give you some really helpful advice in terms of cleaning. While reading this, note that for anything complex or goes outside the scope of your ability—take the dress to your trusted and immigrant owned dry cleaners. Support the local businesses around you in that way.
The first thing you should know, and maybe the most important, do not ever wash your dress in a regular washer and dryer on hot. That’s a sure fire way to run, not only the fabric, but potentially warp its shape. Polyester is a plastic-based material and hot water will only warp the plastic fibers it is made out of. And especially for its delicate nature, it’s prone to be torn, ripped or shredded against the metal surfaces inside both units. If you are, however, a washer and dryer stan, we recommend inverting the dress to have the inner layer show out and to put the dress into a pillow case or cotton sack. This way, you can wash the garment on cold (warm at most) and then air dry it and it will keep the dress protected from the elements around it.
Secondly, maybe you don’t need to wash it all the time, it’s worn minimally, for events, just cause but you need to do some spot treating. The best way to approach this is by dampening a cloth in a solution of one part Oxiclean, two parts warm water. From there, you can gently dab and brush the fabric in areas you need it clean. This can also apply to the inside of the dress where it is lined with a poly satin. You will want to have any spot treated areas air dry flat.
Thirdly, and lastly, if a mega stain or other damage happens to the dress that is beyond your fix, we recommend taking it to your local dry cleaner. A professional can access the best way to clean the garment and bring it back to life. A plus is also that most dry cleaners offer alteration and fixing services, this way if any rips occur then you can double up getting your And Our dress fixed. Note that sometimes you may need to let the dry cleaner know that your dress is delicate and needs to be handled with care. Some will know based off the physical touch, others, not so much.
In conclusion, an And Our dress is an investment in art, in fashion, in beauty, and I want you to treasure this garment like it is the start of your collection. But maintaining it’s beauty comes with some tricks and tips. If you need to get a second opinion on cleaning one of your dresses, reach out to the studio and show us images and how we can help.
